Schoolgirl Photo Diaries

The Czech photographer Michael Pudelka visits a schoolyard to capture a rose-colored reality where girls are both innocent and mean. These photos play with the idea that there are various layers of sentiments in the feminine world. Located in different scenarios, Pudelka’s female subjects can be selfish and furious as well as tender and sweet.

Dressed in mostly pinks and reds, these girls definitely hide secrets, and the photographer puts viewers in a position where they are both silent witnesses and loud strangers. One can see how the girls seem to be taken by their reality, but at other moments they look directly into the camera and seem to dislike its presence. These photos are definitely beautiful and interesting, as they disrupt the idea that schoolgirls are necessarily sweet and soft—they can be actually very secretive and even hypocritical.
